Egg Coffee – A Unique Flavor of Hanoi
Egg coffee is a distinctive Vietnamese drink that originated in the 1940s in Hanoi. It was created by Mr. Nguyễn Văn Giảng, a bartender at the Metropole Hotel. At that time, milk was scarce, so Mr. Giảng came up with the idea of using egg yolk as a substitute, giving birth to a new and captivating beverage.
The main ingredients of egg coffee are drip-brewed black coffee, egg yolk, condensed milk, and sugar. The egg yolk is whipped until frothy, then poured over the hot coffee, forming a creamy, rich layer. When tasted, the bitterness of the coffee perfectly blends with the sweet, creamy flavor of the egg and milk, creating a unique and delightful experience.
Today, egg coffee has become an iconic culinary symbol of Hanoi, attracting not only locals but also international visitors. This distinctive flavor has become an essential part of any journey to explore the capital’s cuisine.
