Vietnamese Coffee

Vietnamese drip coffee, or cà phê phin, is a traditional brewing method that has been part of Vietnamese culture since the 19th century, introduced during French colonial times. Unlike other coffee brewing techniques, the Vietnamese method uses a small metal drip filter called a “phin.” Ground coffee is placed inside the filter, and hot water is poured over it, slowly dripping through the grounds into a cup below.

One of the defining characteristics of Vietnamese drip coffee is its strength and bold flavor, often enhanced by the use of robusta beans, which have a higher caffeine content than arabica. The slow brewing process results in a thick, rich coffee that is commonly enjoyed with sweetened condensed milk, creating the famous cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with milk).

This brewing style reflects the Vietnamese culture of patience and enjoying coffee as a leisurely experience, making it a significant part of daily life.

How to Brew Vietnamese Coffee

1. Prepare the Ingredients and Equipment:
   • Vietnamese coffee filter (phin)
   • Ground Vietnamese coffee (typically robusta)
   • Hot water (around 90°C or 194°F)
   • Condensed milk (optional for cà phê sữa)
   • Ice (for iced coffee)
2. Add Coffee to the Filter: Place 2-3 tablespoons of ground coffee into the phin and gently shake it to level the coffee. Insert the filter press inside and tighten it slightly.
3. Pour Hot Water: Place the phin over a cup. Add a small amount of hot water (just enough to wet the grounds) and let it bloom for 30 seconds. Then, pour in about 160-180 ml of hot water.
4. Wait for It to Drip: The water will slowly drip through the coffee grounds. This process usually takes 4-5 minutes.
5. Enjoy: Once the dripping stops, stir well. For cà phê sữa, add 1-2 tablespoons of condensed milk before brewing. Serve with ice if desired.
